McMurdo Station, Antarctica

The endless winds, ice, and inhuman temperatures of Antarctica are not only the stuff of legends, they also make up a good part of the scientific focus of the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Antarctic research programs. The extreme character of all facets of the Antarctic climate, geology, and natural history make it an indispensable environment for study. The importance of this research and its contribution toward the understanding of regional and global processes cannot be understated.

McMurdo station is the hub for the NSF's Antarctic activities. Each year approximately 3000 scientists, technologists, and support personnel work at the station. Because of the harsh conditions, it is essential that support equipment at the station possess the ultimate in endurance, simplicity, and reliability.

SolaCom teamed with ARINC Inc. to upgrade the VCS at McMurdo Station. The installation consists of three separate systems, comprising 13 positions in all. The touch-screen interface of this system, coupled with HF and FM radio controls, and the comprehensive system feature set, constitute a significant improvement to the previous radio communications capabilities of the station.

We couldn't be happier for the chance to prove ourselves in the world's most formidable climate.
