Northwest Central Dispatch System Chooses Comtech for Next Generation 9-1-1
MELVILLE, N.Y., February 5, 2020 — Comtech Telecommunications Corp. (NASDAQ: CMTL) announced today, that during its second quarter of fiscal 2020, its subsidiary, Comtech Solacom Technologies, Inc., which is part of Comtech’s Commercial Solutions segment, has been selected to provide a Guardian 9-1-1 Call Handling solution to the Northwest Central Dispatch System (NWCDS), an intergovernmental consolidated emergency dispatch system providing 9-1-1 services for several communities in northwest suburban Chicago. Financial terms were not disclosed.
“We’re very proud to be partnering with NWCDS as it brings next-generation emergency call handling and management services to its communities,” said Fred Kornberg, chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Comtech Telecommunications Corp.
The NWCDS center, covering over 170 square miles, serves a population of nearly 500,000, handling an average of 1,677 telephone calls per day and dispatching approximately 246,000 calls for service annually. The NWCDS center consists of eleven member police and fire departments.
In addition, NWCDS provides service to the various fire protection districts and is also the primary dispatch center for:
- Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (“MABAS”) Division 1
- Illinois Law Enforcement Alarm System (“ILEAS”)
- Illinois Telecommunicator Emergency Response Taskforce (“IL-TERT”)
- Northern Illinois Police Alarm System (“NIPAS”)
The Guardian 9-1-1 Call Handling solution NWCDS will receive includes extremely powerful next generation 9-1-1 call taking positions designed to maximize the effectiveness of call taking. The system’s intuitive user interface allows call takers to quickly assess, prioritize, and handle landline, wireless, and Voice over IP (VoIP) calls. Call takers can quickly create conferences, transfer calls, determine the location of wireless callers, and recall recently recorded conversations.
The Guardian 9-1-1 Call Handling solution is also engineered to be future-ready so that next generation capabilities, such as text-to-911, or exchanging video, photos, and data with call takers or first responders can be supported as they become standardized and available to the public. In addition, the system is designed to easily become part of a statewide Emergency Services IP Network (ESInet) once it becomes available.
